To
see exquisite examples of traditional crafts and costumes, you should visit
the ethnographic museums in Kavarna, Balchik and Dobrich. You will find
attractive local pottery and emroidery in the museum shop in Kavarnain
and in the summer craft market in Balchik. Look out for hand made wooden
toys and crocheted lace, often sold on the street by local women. You can
browse through the workshops in the old town of Dobrich to find excellent
souvenirs.
Bulgaria
is a country of musicians, singers and dancers. You are mostly likely to
hear traditional music at village or town festivals. Bulgarian music reflects
the strong influence from the East, and feautures the long deep notes of
reed instruments like the Kaval and the smaller Okarina, which often accompanies
the singers. Dobroudja’s folk songs are unique – telling of the particular
character of its people and their life on the land.
Each town has an official art gallery. Here permanent collections are often enlivened by attractive displays of an artists’ summer school, or children’s art group.
