You
may like to stop for coffee in Kavarna’s attractive town centre before
setting out to explore the town and take the steps down the valley to the
harbour. On the way look inside the Church of the Assumption of St. Mary,
richly furnished with an impressive painted pulpit. The old Turkish Bath,
now houses the Museum of the Sea. You’ll find anchors here from centuries
of ships, and displays which chart the long history of seafaring on the
Black Sea.
6. Chirakman Hill
The high chalk
cliffs of Chirakman dominate Kavarna’s busy fishing harbour. From the top
you can see far along the coast and readily appreciate why people for centuries
kept watch and stood guard here. The walls of the Byzantine Fortress are
clearly visible but you may welcome help from a local guide to recognise
the remains of the 5th century BC fort, 4th century Basilica and medieval
castle.
Take the track
winding its way up the side of the valley for a steady walk to the top.
