Both
these lakes are designated sites of international importance for nature
conservation. They lie on the Via Pontica, one of the major bird routes
in Europe. Many migrating species rest here and many others come south
to spend the winter here.
Almost all
the world’s population of red-breasted geese (about 60 000 birds) winter
in this region. By February, as the snow and ice of mid-winter push them
south they gather around Shabla and Dourankoulak. The sight of fields full
of white-fronted and red-breasted geese grazing together here is concidered
to be one of the greatest bird watching experiences in Europa.
Access to both
lake complexes is limited, but there are opportunities for guided tours
with local naturalists. Call into the tourist office in Shabla (Phone +359
578 2063) for leaflets about Shabla and Dourankoulak Lakes, and up to date
information on what to see where, and details of guided tours.
